An international, peer reviewed, open access journal that focusses on computational methods used in the analysis and annotation of structures, in additional to other areas of computational biology. The journal also seeks to place computational biology within the broader context of biology.

This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Please visit the journal’s homepage for more information, to access full text content, and/or to submit a manuscript.

Visit the Aims and Scope tab for details on article types and areas of particular interest to the journal.

  • Indexed using ESCI, DOAJ, PubMed Central (PMC), and Scopus.
  • Published since 2007
  • Article Processing Charge (APC)* of $1,848 USD is payable upon acceptance

As an Open Access publication, all articles are rigorously peer-reviewed, brought to publication as rapidly as possible, and are freely available online immediately upon publication. Production costs are covered by Article Processing Charges (APC)* paid by the author/institution/funder upon acceptance of the manuscript.

Why Publish Open Access in Bioinformatics and Biology Insights?

  • Visibility and impact. Anyone, anywhere in the world, can read, use and cite your research
  • Rigorous peer review
  • Flexibility: No page or limits or additional page charges. Authors can publish full data sets, figures, tables, etc.
  • Copyright: Authors retain copyright under a Creative Commons License.

Bioinformatics and Biology Insights is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on bioinformatics methods and their applications which must pertain to biological insights. All papers should be easily amenable to biologists and as such help bridge the gap between theories and applications.

It both complements SAGE Publishing's subject-specific journals in the area and also seeks to place bioinformatics in the broader context of biology. The journal welcomes all submissions in the field of bioinformatics and also submissions dealing with the relationship between bioinformatics and the broader field of biology. Submissions of original research, reviews, tutorials, rapid communications, expert commentaries, letters, application notes, and point–counter-point articles are welcomed for peer review. No word limits are imposed, but authors are reminded that excessive word-counts may attract adverse comment by peer reviewers and discourage readers.

The submission of tutorial-type articles is encouraged, in which methods which have been developed in the recent past are reviewed in such a way as to make them readily comprehensible for Biologists. Papers discussing methodologies are encouraged, providing they explicitly demonstrate that new biological insights have been gained or that earlier methods used to gain a new insight can be replaced.

This journal welcomes new manuscripts for peer review on the following topics:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Computational biology and the broader field of biology
  • Methods used in the analysis and annotation of structures
  • The relationship between bioinformatics and the broader field of biology

Please note that manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines may be returned. Only manuscripts of sufficient quality that meet the aims and scope of Bioinformatics and Biology Insights will be reviewed.

Bioinformatics and Biology Insights publishes commentaries, editorials, letters to the editor, meeting reports, original research, reviews, short commentaries, short reports, and technical advances

    Article Processing Charge

If, after peer review, your manuscript is accepted for publication, a one-time Article Processing Charge (APC)* is payable. This APC covers the cost of publication and ensures that your article will be freely available online in perpetuity under a Creative Commons license.

The APC is $1,848 USD and will be payable upon acceptance.

Bioinformatics and Biology Insights publishes manuscripts under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial license (CC BY NC), which allows others to re-use the work without permission as long as the work is properly referenced and the use is non-commercial.

Alternative license arrangements are available, for example, to meet particular funder mandates, made at the author's request.
