Advances in Developing Human Resources (ADHR) focuses on the issues that help you work more effectively in human resource development. The journal spans the realms of performance, learning, and integrity within an organizational context. Balancing theory and practice, each Issue of the journal is devoted to a different topic central to the development of human resources. ADHR has covered subjects as wide-ranging and vital as performance improvement, action learning, on-the-job training, informal learning, how HRD relates to the new global economy, leadership, and the philosophical foundations of HRD practice.

Each Issue of ADHR focuses on a single topic of importance to HRD professionals. Special guest editors propose a thematic emphasis for each issue. Advances in Developing Human Resources is a quarterly journal whose single issues explore and examine discrete topics. These single issues (or "back issues," once the subsequent issue is published) are available individually or in quantities for use in a classroom or training environment. Balancing practice, theory, and readability, each issue is devoted to important and timely topics related to the development of human resources. The content of the journal spans the realms of performance, learning, and integrity within an organizational context. Readable and relevant to practitioners, each issue is grounded in sound research and theory and edited by a top scholar in the field.

    Research to Practice: Each Issue of ADHR focuses on a significant problem or timely issue related to the development of human resources in organizations and the larger society in which HRD functions. While ADHR does not always report new research, what is reported must be grounded in and consistent with the best and latest research.

    SUBMISSION PROCESS

    Proposal. Unsolicited proposals will require an initial discussion with the Editor in Chief (EIC).  The proposer(s) of the Issue are the potential Issue Editors.Once approved to move forward by the EIC, the proposal will undergo a peer-review process by the Editorial Board. A proposal will generally consist of 7-8 articles including the Preface and the concluding article. The format for a proposal should minimally contain:

    1. Title page

    2. Table of Contents (including authors)

    3. Preface (typically the Issue Editor(s) or a guest author)

    • Introduces the topic, states the problem, and gives relevant background of the literature.
    • Includes a section that should be titled: Purpose of the Issue.
    • Includes a section that discusses how the proposed Issue will advance HRD research, theory, and practice
    • Includes a section that provides a brief preview of each article

    4. Contributing articles:

    • Presented in the form of the 3-part Abstract: problem, solution, stakeholders, including 3-4 keywords.
    • Includes a section that explains how the potential article will address HRD research, theory, and practice.
    • Includes a section that explains how the potential article speaks to the overall purpose of the Issue.
    • Should be approximately 400-500 words.

    5. Concluding article (typically the Issue Editor(s)

    • Brings together the entire collection of articles and explains how the Issue advances the field of HRD.
    • Other relevant points of discussion that emphasizes the significance and contribution of the collection.

    6. References. Shows all cited references within the proposal.

    7. Biographies of Issue Editor(s) and contributing authors (with full contact information)

    Note: Individual authors (including Issue editor) can appear on no more than two articles, including the Preface.

    A thorough Issue proposal typically contains between 10-15 pages (not including bios); adheres to APA 6th Edition format.

    Proposals are distributed to the Editorial team and/or members of the Editorial Board selected by the EIC for review. Each article is reviewed independently. Proposals are reviewed based on quality as well as content. Therefore, it is not guaranteed that all proposed articles will be invited to full manuscript write-up. Reviewers’ comments are synthesized by the Editorial Assistant and reviewed by the EIC who will make the final decision to invite to full manuscript write-up. The review period ranges from approx. 1 month to 6 weeks.

    Manuscript Preparation. The format for each manuscript accepted for inclusion in the Issue should contain four major sections (in this order):

    • Title Page
      • Full article title
      • Acknowledgments and credits
      • Corresponding author (name, address, phone/fax, e-mail)
      • Each author’s complete name and institutional affiliation(s)
      • Grant numbers and/or funding information
    • The 3-part Abstract with four-five keywords
    • Main body
    • References
    • Tables, figures, and appendices as appropriate

    The manuscripts are submitted separately to the EIC by the Issue Editor(s) within a specified time frame. Manuscripts are distributed to the Editorial team and/or members of the Editorial Board selected by the EIC for review. Review criteria includes but is not limited to:

    • Potential for advancement of HRD theory.
    • Potential for advancement of HRD practice.
    • Completeness of the ideas.
    • Quality of the writing.
    • Fit with the original purpose of the article and the overall Issue.

    The review process is approximately 6 weeks. Reviewers’ decisions/comments are synthesized by the Editorial Assistant and reviewed by the EIC. The decision to accept; accept with minor revisions; accept with major revisions; extensive revisions needed, but do not reject; and reject will be determined.  The EIC will make the final determination in the event of a non-majority decision on a manuscript.

    The Issue Editor(s) are responsible for overseeing revisions and final editing of all articles in the Issue within a specified period of time. Should also ensure that author bios appear at the end of each article. The EIC is responsible for the final review and submission to the publisher. Once the Issue is in production, the publisher will work directly authors on additional queries.

    A complete Issue is approximately 145 double-spaced manuscript pages or 45,000-50,000 words and adheres to APA 6th edition guidelines.
