The book comes with access to an exciting companion website offering the reader downloads, web links, powerpoint slides and case studies. Every chapter of the book further includes further case studies, along with lots of clear definitions of terms, and reflection points, making this book the essential introductory text for all social work students.
This text provides comprehensive coverage of sociological themes of major importance in current social care practice. It will be a useful resource for learners throughout their undergraduate training in social care.
A good reader in introduction to the concepts of sociology relevant to social work.
As a sociologist I found it interesting, contmeporary and accessible.
In my role as Practice Educator I have used this book as a source to refresh my knowledge etc within this area as well as directing students to read specific chapters.
The book is clearly set out, chapters are well defined, the content is structured with excellent definitions and activities (used in group sessions to stimualte discussion). The 'Lived Experience' at the end of each chapter was a welcome addition to academic texts, helping students make the link with 'the real world'.
an excellent and well written introduction to sociology for social work students
The book is useful to students on the FD Care Studies course as a supplementary book. The chapters on different topics are informative and thought provoking for students and the activities are useful for group/class discussion. It is of more use to those in the social care field but only marginally for those in health. Therefore it is to be nominated as supplemental reading rather than essential.
A useful discussion of the issues that will assist our students greatly.
I like the approach taken in the book of using practitioners and service-users as well as academics. Its topics are relevant for a wider audience than just social work.
An excellent selection of key sociological themes and perspectives, applied to the Social work area of practice. Very useful for undergraduate social work degree students
A well written book exploring the intricacies and subtleties around this varied and often overlooked topic
Really useful book enabling an applied understanding of sociological concepts and theories.
