Supplements
I will not use this book to teach to health professionals but to students in a social communication curriculum. These students are eligible to work in health-care settings to organize and to realize communication strategies and activities. I suggest them to use this book as a guide to explain to health professionals why social phenomena such as class, race or sexuality are relevant for them as practitioners.
The NMC (2010) PRE-REGISTRATION CURRICULUM NOW EXPECTS HEALTH PROFESSIONALS TO HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE AROUND SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES AND MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY IN ORDER TO COMPREHEND THE SOCIAL CONTEXT OF OUR PRACTICE. THIS BOOK MEETS THAT NEED AND COMES AT THE RIGHT TIME!
I recommend this text to all nursing students as it comprehensively covers a lot of contemporary issues in Sociology.
is a good book but the course is about the sociology of professions. due to the complexity of the health professions, this text can be adopted as fundamental book this course.
A great text for our HE students looking into the social aspects of health & illness. Each chapter follows the same format, making the sometimes daunting subject of sociology, easier to understand. With key definitions, case studies and great to see exercises to aid understanding and recommendation for further reading.
I would certainly recommend this text.
This is useful supplementary reading for pre-registration nurses and midwives to help them understand the more common topics of sociology. It is easy to read with a comprehensive glossary. The case studies are useful to facilitate class discussion and reflective activities.
Students will be advised to read this book and complete the excercises within it to gain further understanding of the impact of sociological theories on health. The work is succinct and the students should find it accessible to engage with in relation to nursing
A good introduction for health and social care students to sociological concepts.
