Approaching qualitative research for the first time and unsure how to get started? This book captures what you need to know to jump into effective qualitative or mixed methods research.

The book gets you up to speed on the specifics of qualitative research, while showing how it complements quantitative research and how to draw on and hone your existing skills to conduct impactful research. It covers the whole research process, from explaining what theories are for and planning your research design, through gathering and working with your data, to developing good practice in research reporting and dissemination.

The book also:
• Showcases the value of qualitative research, helping you understand its relevance, credibility and validity.
• Grapples with how to decolonise your approach, do research in an ethical and inclusive way, and debias your thinking.
• Challenges you to rethink how you conduct research and choose the most appropriate methods for your project.

A clear and comprehensive book explaining the mysteries of qualitative research for those trained in a different paradigm. A must-read for the quantitative researcher who undertakes mixed-method research or occasionally assesses qualitative proposals or papers – or who simply seeks to broaden their research horizons.

Trisha Greenhalgh
Professor of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford

In Qualitative Research for Quantitative Researchers, Helen Kara offers an engaging and accessible ‘way in’ to the world of qualitative research for those more accustomed to working with numbers and big data. Her practical examples help demystify what it is that qualitative researchers actually do, while highlighting the participatory and transformative power of these approaches. A truly welcome and inviting introduction to the science and craft of qualitative research.

Qualitative Research for Quantitative Researchers by Helen Kara is the book we must read and not just to be familiar with research methods. In 2022, this well written manual is very relevant for new approaches to research evaluations and assessment.

Gabi Lombardo
Director of the European Alliance for SSH

Kara Introduces qualitative research in a pragmatic, creative and cross-border way, giving specific tools to quantitative researchers. Learners are encouraged to innovate and to use the flexibility of the approach, with amazing research cases from around the world that were useful in diverse professional contexts.

I really like how this book is written, in simple text and in chunks that are easily digestible. It is also novel that it is written from the viewpoint of coming from a quantitative background. A good read when starting out qualitative research- recommended.

The range of topics and ease of reading make this a great text for my doctoral students as an introduction to qualitative research approaches.

I also included quotations from the textbook in my presentations with regards to research designs. The critique on the "western" lens on research as a whole is interesting and important but it would be important too to contextualize more and also in detail. I would therefore also critizise the use of the term colonialism and its conceptualizisation in this book with regards to ethics and scientific quality criteria.
