Principles and Practices of Teaching and Training
A guide for teachers and trainers in the FE and skills sector

October 2017 | 576 pages | Learning Matters
Written by bestselling author Ann Gravells, this is the complete go-to guide for anyone wanting to be (or working as) a teacher or trainer in the further education and skills sector, in the UK and beyond. It has all the information you need to work towards a qualification such as the Award, Certificate or Diploma in Education and Training. It is also relevant to anyone taking a Train the Trainer course, or an international teaching qualification.

The book takes you through all the information you need to know, opening up the topic for learning in an easily accessible way. Interactive activities are included throughout, along with real examples of teaching and training in practice. The book also includes examples of completed teaching documents.

This is a comprehensive text, covering:
  • The role of a teacher/trainer
  • Factors contributing to learning
  • Planning and facilitating learning for groups and individuals
  • Using technology and resources to support learning
  • Assessing learning
  • Quality assurance
  • Evaluation, reflection, and continuing professional development (CPD)

This is a well organised and concisely written book, covering a whole range of topics and ideas that trainees would need to consider while on the DET/PGCE course. I would thoroughly recommend the book for anyone starting out on this ITE course as a go to source for information which can be the starting point to further reading and research.

This text gives a comprehensive insight into the principles and practices of teaching in an accessible format. The tone throughout is interesting and engaging and the opportunities for applying theory to practice are clear. Highly recommended.

This book expands on many of Ann Gravell's other works and provides a comprehensive volume of use to anyone working as a teacher or trainer in the education and skills sector. Although primarily aimed at new teachers and trainers the book is a useful tool for anyone working in the sector. The book is very accessible and contains a range of examples and activities, a comprehensive index and useful appendices. An excellent textbook.

The text overs a sufficient in-depth overview of the Initial Teacher Education provision for Further, Adult & Higher Education requirements. The text is directly mapped to the Diploma (DET) specifications with some interesting ideas for activities to be adopted into session contents. Though this is the strength, this is also the criticism of the work as rather than an exploration on the subject, it is a mapped discussion to the criteria. However, the work is surprisingly extensive and written with clarity, though greater integration of active research would have better validated the arguments presented.
