SAGE Publishing hires Ian Mulvany to engage with Big Data and Social Research

London, UK. SAGE Publishing today announces that Ian Mulvany is joining the company as Head of Product Innovation. Mulvany joins from eLife and will be in place from September 2016.

Mulvany will join SAGE Publishing’s innovation unit developing digital products and services that respond to new methodological challenges facing social scientists in a world of big data.  SAGE is excited by changes in the research landscape as a result of the availability of varied, vast datasets that can be used by researchers to provide insights into the social world. Mulvany will be actively shaping product strategy and development, driving product innovation beyond our traditional publishing.

Welcoming Mulvany to SAGE, Ziyad Marar, Global Publishing Director commented:

“Social research is on the cusp of a major turning point thanks to the rise of big data and new technology. SAGE as an innovator in research methods will be creating new ways to help researchers, from political science, criminology, sociology, psychology and other fields, take advantage of this huge opportunity. Speaking of his appointment Martha Sedgwick, Executive Director of Product Innovation, further stated:

His combination of technical skill, appetite for innovation and deep interest in network science will support the disciplines we serve incredibly well.  I look forward to him working with us at SAGE to tackle new challenges facing social scientists in a world of data intensive research.”

Mulvany further commented:

“Throughout my career I have been interested in creating tools that enhance the researcher experience, and help researchers make best use of the web. Now new tools and techniques are emerging that are enabling entirely new ways of understanding to emerge, and I couldn’t be more excited to be involved with SAGE in helping support the emergence of, and understanding of, these new tools. I’ve been deeply impressed by the depth of SAGE’s vision, and am delighted to be joining a team that are totally focused on supporting researchers.”
