Transforming Behaviour in the Classroom
A solution-focused guide for new teachers

First Edition

February 2016 | 176 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

Being able to effectively manage the behaviour in your classroom is one of the basic foundations of good teaching. However creating a positive productive learning environment is challenging as the causes of behavioural issues can be complex and difficult to identify.

This book presents a solution-focused approach to behaviour management in primary and secondary schools, starting with the child and offering a flexible methodology and practical strategies for facilitating long-term positive behaviour.

Key coverage includes:

•             An overview of main approaches to behaviour management drawing from educational theory and research

•             Case studies throughout the book exploring key strategies and issues

•             How to develop confidence in the classroom as a new teacher

•             Neuroscience and behaviour: what can we learn from recent scientific discoveries?

Geoffrey James’ book Transforming Behaviour in the Classroom provides a really sensible, evidenced based approach to getting the conditions for learning right. It’s the kind of book I wished I’d had on my PGCE and in my NQT year – practical strategies to prepare, plan and teach for good behaviour in your classroom, backed up by real examples.

This book provides an interesting and thought provoking approach to behaviour management and would be a very useful part of any behaviour toolkit or range of approaches for teachers new and old to try.

This is an important book for all those concerned with improving our schools. It is practical and positive and develops a new professional pathway to the solutions that all schools must find in their everyday life. Highly recommended.

This publication is essential for those studying and supporting individuals in the school environment. Thought provoking views in how students / teaching assistants can further support pupil behaviours.

This is a nicely organised and engaging book that looks at behavioural issues in teaching. It is focussed on 'hands on' strategies and ideas but it is less helpful in terms of theory, so not ideal for undergraduate education students. Very useful for newly qualified teachers, though.

This is a handy and helpful book. It has a good mixture of detail and activities in the book including exercises and reflections. This helps with the whole development process for the reader and supports you to consider ways to implement what you are learning.
