For me, this book fills in the gaps for students, particularly in relation to the historical context of social work. It's really readable so definitely one I will be asking the library to order.

Very important resource for new entrants to social work courses. It clearly lays out the role, challenges and ethical dilemma relating to this complex profession. Students have told me that it has provided a good overview of the current social care task in the UK.

The emphasis on the historical background is really valuable in this book and helps students to understand the developing social policy context within which social work is constructed. This book provides an excellent introduction to social work for entrants and enquirers to social work programmes. The focus on the English context does limit its use north of the border.
An updated version of essential reading for any introductory course in social work
A very good read in relation to up dating us on the significant changes in social work practice and how to respond to these changes. It provided the students with a realistic view of what is happening in the field. The students used this book within their case study analysis and as a tool to clarify some of their observations of practice.
