NASSP Bulletin is the award-winning official journal of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). As a peer-reviewed journal, NASSP Bulletin publishes scholarly and research-based knowledge that informs practice, supports data-driven decisions, and advances the vision and performance of middle level and high school principals. NASSP Bulletin features a wide range of articles of enduring interest to educators to help promote student learning and achievement, provide insight for strategic planning and decision making in schools, and provide research and contemporary perspectives on educational reform and policies. NASSP Bulletin is also used as a resource and a teaching text by professors of educational leadership who are involved in preparing new school administrators, by school district leaders at all levels and their professional staffs who are concerned about professional development and by new and veteran school leaders and teacher leaders.

NASSP Bulletin is an award-winning scholarly journal that informs practice, supports data-driven decisions, and advances the vision and performance of middle level and high school principals. A peer-reviewed journal, NASSP Bulletin is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December. Because NASSP Bulletin features a wide range of articles of enduring interest to educators, members typically retain their copies for many years and revisit them often for research. NASSP Bulletin is also used as a resource and a teaching text by many professors of educational administration who are involved in preparing administrators that are new to the field.

  • NASSP Bulletin is a peer-refereed journal that contributes scholarly and research-based knowledge which informs practice, supports data-driven decisions, and advances the vision and performance of middle-level and high school principals. NASSP Bulletin articles are timely and professionally thought provoking, and they emphasize effective administration and leadership in middle-level and secondary schools.

    Priority Topics: Each issue of the NASSP Bulletin contains research and scholarly articles on a variety of issues and themes. Articles on the following topics will receive priority for review:

    NASSP Bulletin publishes research and scholarly articles on a wide variety of topics and issues related to effective leadership and administration in schools. Authors should feel free to submit manuscripts exploring other topics germane to leadership in middle-level and secondary schools, that are empirical, conceptual, and theoretical in nature and scope and that provide policy and legal analyses and reviews of research and practice, all of which inform effective leadership vision, practice, and administration.

    Manuscript Submission

    Manuscripts submitted for publication in the NASSP Bulletin should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages (excluding references, illustrations, tables, and figures) and should be submitted online through Sage Track: You will need the following items to complete your online submission:

    • manuscript
    • author contact information
    • 60- to 80-word abstract
    • 3 to 5 keywords
    • cover letter

    The cover letter should include the following information: (1) a statement of commitment to publish the manuscript in the journal; (2) the title of the manuscript; (3) contact information for each author of the manuscript, including title and institutional affiliation, mailing address, telephone number(s), e-mail addresses, and fax numbers; and (4) a 40- to 50-word biographical paragraph for each author.

    Manuscript Format and Guidelines: All copy should be typed, double-spaced, and printable on 8-½ × 11 inch white paper. Manuscripts accepted for publication by the NASSP Bulletin must follow appropriate style guidelines contained in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA), 7th Edition. All manuscript notes, references, tables, and figures appearing at the end of the manuscript must conform to the APA guidelines. Manuscripts not conforming to APA guidelines will not be reviewed.

    Copyright: In submitting manuscripts to NASSP Bulletin, authors certify that their work has not been published previously and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. Authors are required to sign a statement of original work and a copyright release. This requirement protects the rights of the publisher and those of its authors from copyright infringement. Authors must seek the express permission of Sage Publications to republish their NASSP Bulletin article in other venues and must comply with all requirements attendant with such a request.

    Previously Copyrighted Work: Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references, quotations, and tables and must obtain all necessary permission to use previously copyrighted work.

    Peer-Review Process: Manuscripts submitted to NASSP Bulletin undergo three major stages of review:

    • Editorial Review by staff edutors to assess the appropriateness of the manuscript for the journal
    • Peer review by two or more members of the editorial board of the journal who are recognized scholars and experts in the area or content of the manuscript
    • Final editor review to determine the suitability of the manuscript for publication based upon peer review

    All manuscripts are "anonymously reviewed," and authors should make every effort to guarantee that the manuscript contains no information that provides self-identification.

    Acknowledgment and Publication Decision: All manuscripts are acknowledged upon receipt. Authors should allow at least 3 to 4 months for the review process to be completed. Publication decisions will be communicated to authors through mailed correspondence.

    Book Reviews: Books for review should be sent directly to the editor. The editor commissions the writing of such reviews. While we welcome suggestions for books to review, unsolicited book reviews will not be considered for publication.

    This journal is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
