Ioanna Palaiologou's work has always proved popular with our students but this incarnation of her work on 'observation' has been particularly well received and is usually 'out' in the library. The first chapter is useful for extending beyond EYFS and the chapters are convincing in terms the necessity of observation in terms of decision making and planning and also offers the students 'freedom' to be creative in how they might collect and use data in a setting.

The observation techniques that are described in this book will be very useful for students new to such practice. While the playwork students, for whom this book is recommended, are more likely to observe school age children outside of an educational setting, it will nevertheless be of interest to them and support their growing understanding of the different approaches taken to working with children.
