Protecting children from emotional abuse and neglect is a serious and complex area of social work practice. This book takes readers step-by-step through the underlining theory, skills and practice of working with vulnerable children, highlighting essential contemporary research evidence throughout.
Part 1: Understanding introduces the nature and consequences of child neglect and emotional abuse, including up-to-date knowledge about the physiological impact of childhood malnutrition and emotional deprivation.
Part 2: Assessment considers in detail the factors which can contribute to the complexity of the assessment process and explains assessment procedures.
Part 3: Response offers insights into positive interventions, including some innovative modern therapies and family management approaches such as 'PACT'.
Using a series of case studies to make complex skills and knowledge accessible, this is essential reading for students and professionals across disciplines that may come into contact with vulnerable children.
An absolute must in relation to the child protection module. This is a really good book in relation to the application of neglect and emotional abuse the two biggest areas in safeguarding.
Comprehensive guide for students on this subject
useful supplementary text to recommend to students alongside more general texts on safeguarding and the role of the nurse
A very accessible book that uses case studies to illustrate emotional abuse and neglect in context.
Useful resource for a unit on Multi Agency Working
I found this book to be useful for level 4 and 5 students. A variety of case studies are included supporting students to link theoretical to real life. Useful across a range of modules.
An excellent text and accompaniment for child development and social work assessment practice studies. The book supports and guides social work practice, specifically through early years and beyond. Chapter 6 'Disorders and Development' is particularly useful.
Very helpful resource
This is a most welcome edition to the field of child protection and safeguarding. The book covers some of the complex issues involved in ways that are accessible to and facilitative of student learning.
A very useful text, especially when considering the difficulties encountered in classifying many instances of child abuse for legal and recording purposes.
