R Indira (President) Formerly Professor of Sociology, University of Mysore, Mysuru, India

R Indira is Professor of Sociology and Director of the International Centre at the University of Mysore. In her academic career of 38 years, she has also held positions such as the Chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Honorary Director of the Centre for Women’s Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Her distinctions include an Honorary Associate Adjunct Professorship from the University of Iowa (2009), USA; Canadian Faculty Research Fellowship (2007); ICSSR Senior Research Fellowship (2005–06); Shastri Applied Research Project (2003–05); CIDA–Shastri Partnership Project (1998–2001); and the Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship (1991–92). She was conferred the SADODITA award.

Her books include Mahile, Samaja Mattu Samskruti (Women, Society and Culture), which won the Triveni Award from the Kannada Lekhakiyara Parishat; Streevaada Diksuchi (A Reader in Feminism); Bharatiya Samaja (Indian Society); Mahile Mattu Kautumbika Himse (Women and Domestic Violence); Saamajika Samshodhana Vidhanagalu (Research Methods in Social Sciences); and a two-volume series titled Gender and Society in India. She wrote a fortnightly column ‘Manushi’ in the Prajanudi, the leading Kannada newspaper, on gender-related themes between 2002 and 2006, while another fortnightly column ‘Hosadari’ (New Path) is now being published in the same newspaper.
