The COVID-19 Shock to Our Deep Inequities: Mitigating the Impact

Edited by:

October 2023 | 201 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc

The COVID-19 pandemic affected nearly every aspect of household health, as well as the social and economic well-being of individuals and communities across the United States. This volume of The ANNALS focuses on how and where the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated preexisting inequalities in all these areas, as well as on potential strategies to address or at least mitigate them.

This volume highlights the social and economic equivalent risks and consequences of the pandemic and how they intersect with each other. The authors explore the places and populations that were most vulnerable to COVID deaths and where they coincided with vulnerability to high levels of deaths of despair. They also used metrics of well-being to explore COVID’s spillover effects—uncertainty, high levels of unemployment, and social isolation, among other things—on vulnerable populations.
