The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires that articles receiving NIH funding are deposited in PubMedCentral (PMC) and made available for public access no later than twelve months after publication. SAGE supports authors depositing their articles in PMC at any time, with the following conditions on public availability of the manuscript:
The following journals have arranged automatic deposit into PubMedCentral of the Author Accepted Manuscript of articles indicating NIH funding:
The RCUK Open Access policy applies to journal articles that acknowledge Research Council funding. The RCUK OA policy requires posting funded articles: (1) with no restrictions on non‐commercial re‐use, and (2) within a defined period. SAGE supports authors depositing their articles in a database that satisfies the RCUK policy, with the understanding that the article may be used in any non-commercial manner by users without restriction. Articles may be deposited in compliance with the RCUK Open Access policy as follows:
Non-commercial use of the article may include printing, downloading, copying, and text and data-mining the content of the article. Users should only save downloaded copies of the article, or excerpts thereof, to the user’s personal files and shall not post or share the materials with any other parties.
SAGE is fully compliant with the Open Access policy of the Charity Open Access Fund (COAF), a partnership of the following six health research charities:
For any article funded by a COAF partner, SAGE will comply with the COAF requirements of: (1) publishing the article under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence, Version 4 (effective 1st April 2017), and (2) automatically depositing the article in PubMed Central (PMC) on behalf of the author with no embargo.
To facilitate the above steps, it is essential that the corresponding author informs SAGE of the COAF partner funding of their article by selecting the relevant FundRef ID for the funding agency when submitting their article.
SAGE regularly audits the funding status of the Open Access articles we have published to ensure agreed-upon processes have taken place, and we will make any needed adjustments in a timely manner.
