The book provides relevant and easy links to practice. This makes it easy for students to implement supports and interventions when they go on placement and work with children with additional needs. the book also provides an overview of child development and how children with additional needs may delayed in reaching milestones. The book is easily accessable for students and is well suited for an applied course in Early Childhood Care and Education.

This book is a really useful guide to recognising children with special needs in early years. The summaries of expectations at each major developmental stage in the main areas; communication, language and literacy, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development, along with suggestions for themed observations, provide good starting points to this process. Chapter 7 provides helpful guidance about how to analyse themed observations once completed, and the final chapter described the 'graduated response' to making additional provision for children who need it. Throughout, the 'points for practice' encourage a reflective and inclusive approach.
