Practical Prescribing for Medical Students

Edited by:

November 2013 | 184 pages | Learning Matters
Learning to prescribe is an essential part of medical training. Due to various high profile serious prescribing errors, the GMC have introduced stricter prescribing standards which medical students must meet in order to graduate. This book helps medical students learn the essentials of safe prescribing practice, and is aimed directly at their needs. It covers all the aspects of prescribing required by the GMC, including principles of prescribing, law and ethics, professional responsibilities, patient communication, at-risk groups, avoiding common errors and what to do when things go wrong.

Key features:
  •  Directly linked to the prescribing competencies in the GMC's Tomorrow's Doctors and Good Practice in Prescribing Medicines
  • Real-life prescribing case studies and scenarios relate the principles to actual practice and placement situations
  • Activities throughout each chapter for testing prescribing knowledge and skills
  • Test questions for the new Prescribing Skills Assessment to help students prepare and be confident that they can pass.

This is a comprehensive book on the subject of prescribing for medical students. The chapters are well set out with good use of case studies throughout. I would recommend this book to students of all disciplines as well as those studying non-medical prescribing qualifications

Aimed at Phases 3 of the MBBS, I am eager for students to engage with this text which is commensurate with national/GMC policy. The complex nature of prescribing is made simple with the principles and practice easily defined.

Practical Prescribing for Medical Students Provides a clear introduction to evidence based prescribing with clinical cases relevant to what students are likely to encounter as a junior doctor. The chapter summaries are useful for consolidating key points and the clinical case based exercises enable students to apply the clinical theory to practice. It also explores the practical aspects of shared decision making and prescribing in both primary and secondary care. The prescribing for specialist patient groups such as paediatrics and pregnancy are both very useful.
