Nelson-Jones' Theory and Practice of Counselling and Psychotherapy

Sixth Edition
  • Richard Nelson-Jones - Fellow of the British Psychological Society and of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy

November 2014 | 528 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd

This sixth edition provides an essential introduction to the major theoretical approaches in counselling and psychotherapy today. Comprehensive and accessible, it now includes two brand new chapters on Mindfulness and Positive Therapy, as well as additional content on ethics, on new developments in each approach, including the latest research and updated references.

Following a clearly-defined structure, each chapter describes the origin of the therapeutic approach, a biography of its originator, its theory and practice, discusses case material and further developments, and suggests further reading. Each chapter also contains review and personal questions. Richard Nelson-Jones' authoritative and practical textbook is the ideal companion for students on introductory courses and those embarking on professional training.

This has been a staple text for our undergraduates for many years, and the 6th is a welcome revision, particularly relevant to 21st century living and the IT age. Mindfulness is also a big buzz for our students and they will be pleased to see this included also.

This book is packed full of factual information about key counselling theories. The common subtitles within chapters such as ‘Key Concepts’ and ‘Process of Therapy’ make is easier to directly compare different theories. This layout makes it easy to navigate and refer to as a reference tool. Case examples help relate theory to practice and the review questions at the end of each chapter help readers to evaluate their understanding of each theory. This book is a useful resource for both teachers and counselling students in comparing different counselling theories. The inclusion of the chapters on Mindfulness and Positive Therapy bring the book up to date with the latest research.

Wonderfully easy read for anyone undertaking a counselling course. Lots of very practical information and suggestions about how to work with clients and develop a meaningful therapeutic relationship.
A great go-to book to give the reader a good over view of the stages and skills of therapy and great prompts to additional reading in every chapter.
well worth reading.
