Strategic Management & Business Policy (General)
- Dr Tahir Rashid, Lecturer in Strategy and Marketing, Salford Business School, University of Salford
This exciting new textbook is built on the belief that strategic management principles are more straightforward than they seem. Unlike other textbooks, it does not overcomplicate the discussion with enigmatic layers of theory or irrelevant perspectives from other disciplines. Instead you will find focused, clearly articulated coverage of the key topics of strategic management, encouraging critical reflection and deeper exploration on your own terms.
Fully developed to cover the essentials of any strategic management course, this textbook not only creates understanding of the principles of strategy, but shows you how to apply them constructively in the face of real-world practicalities. Throughout the text, these principles are put into context with illustrations and examples drawn from all over the world and from all kinds of organization - from Shell, Airbus and Tesco to small and non-profit enterprises.
With an emphasis on topical, distinctive and engaging features, this text offers:
- Over 120 short, topical case studies drawn from every type of organization across more than 20 countries
- Worksheets for strategy analysis that can be used to tackle real-world situations
- Learning outcomes, key points and summaries to focus your reading on what matters
- Chapter-by-chapter exercises for further study and discussion
- Suggestions for further reading to deepen your understanding of the theories underpinning the chapters
The book is complemented by a companion website featuring a range of tools and resources for lecturers and students, including PowerPoint slides, teaching notes, links to journal articles and an interactive glossary.

A very good resource for students studying strategy on Business Management programmes at Masters level. Cases used are excellent and informative.
The course's scope involves adoption of strategic management approach in to Turkish Public Administration. The Book's approach would be valuable for my students.
useful but i will keep grant as the core text
Parts of the book are useful for my students. However I feel this is not detailed enough for management students, whilst being too specific for general students of management eg in the public sector
An excellent book. Easy to read. It is well presented - Learning Outcomes - Case Studies - Exercises etc. Excellent consolidation learning process This book will be adopted September 2012.
Adequate content, well written and with very helpful companion website
This is an excellent text which approaches the subject of strategy from a practical, business perspective rather than the standard theroetical, teaching perspective. This change in application / direction together with the 120 short business cases is a welcome relief from the standard tombs of knowledge upon which most academic programmes are based and I envisage this being particularly useful within postgraduate and professional education where the emphasis is on doing rather than thinking.
At this time of year we review our resources for the next cohort of learners. I am pleased to say that this text is one of the best that I have found for our level five and seven learners. I am particularly inpressed with the sections on "the essence of strategy, the external environment, strategic decision making and innovative strategies." I like the way it features and then develops learning objectives. The referencing is appropriate for qualifications at this level.
