Equality and Diversity in Social Work Practice

Edited by:

June 2010 | 160 pages | Learning Matters
Social workers must develop a sensitive yet informed approach when working with service users from different social and cultural groups. In many aspects of life, including accessing human services, people are marginalised, ignored, stigmatised or discriminated against because of one or more aspects of their identity: age, sexual orientation, faith or belief, gender, race or ethnicity, social class, and disability.

This book acts as a guide for students to develop their understanding of these various groups while illustrating how the social work value base can be a central part of such understanding.

"While the style is very simple this is also to the credit of the book, making it a highly accessible publication for Level I students. It offers a wide agenda on social divisions, is a useful introductory text - not least because of its neat conclusion, helpful glossary and provision of very good reading lists." Lecturer, University of Coventry

Great easy to read book have recommended students to read this book.

A good starter resource when looking at Equality, Diversity and Rights in health and social care practice. Very accessible read including perpectives of discrimination looking at factors of discrimination including age, sexual orientation, faith or belief, gender, race or ethnicity, social class, and disability.

This book was prescribed in 2012 and for 2013 it is now used as recommended reading. It is useful book. Only drawback is that legislative references and case examples are all UK based while students are working with different context and legislation.

A good starter book for any student looking at this topic.

The book itself is easy and clear to read and comprehend.
It gives good clear examples, and activities that can be used within a taught session to ensure students understanding and deepend their knowledge base.

There is a comprehensive reference list at the back of the book which will give students access to other source materials that can help their studies.

There is a glossary at the back which gives additional information to students and ensure their understanding of clear terms. However, this is not overly large and will not deter the students.

Each section gives a nice introduction that clearly sets the scene and what will be discussed in that chapter.

A book that is so pertinent to the social work discipline that i would query any academic or student who does not own it and is not recommending it to others. Accessible, interesting and clearly links to relevant ethics and codes.

This publication has been particularly useful for the level 6 under-graduate students who are completing the "Current Themes" module. There is a positive approach to critical analysis of equality and diversity in social work, which is demonstrative of the ethos of the teaching utilised to encourage the students to develop their critical analysis of their lateral thinking.
