What do we publish?
Submissions should make meaningful contributions to the field of patient experience, with clear implications for practice or policy. We particularly welcome work that explores clinician and workforce experience as essential to improving care. Articles that bridge research and real-world application are encouraged, especially those offering actionable insights to enhance patient outcomes and experiences.
- Research Articles: Systematic investigations that advance knowledge and practices related to health and care experiences.
- Patient Perspectives: Firsthand accounts from patients, families, or caregivers that highlight lived experiences within health and care.
- Industry Insights: Commentaries authored by professionals, clinicians, researchers, and leaders working in the health and care industry.
- Research Briefs: Concise reports presenting original research findings or emerging evidence.
Please note: We do not publish medical case reports or manuscripts focused primarily on clinical outcomes or highly technical clinical research. Submissions should emphasize relevance to improving experience and outcomes for patients, families, clinicians, and the broader health and care workforce.
Who do we serve?
We are committed to advancing the understanding and improvement of experiences within systems of health and care. The journal is designed for:
- Health and care professionals (clinicians, nurses, allied health providers, and care team members)
- Organizational leaders (executives, administrators, quality and experience leaders)
- Researchers and educators working to translate evidence into practice
- Patient, family, and community voices that inform experience transformation
How do we define “patient experience”?
Health and care experiences are complex and multifaceted, shaped by clinical, operational, cultural, and relational factors. As an initial guide, we reference the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), which defines patient experience as the range of interactions patients have with the healthcare system, including communication with providers, scheduling, coordination, and support. We also recognize the importance of workforce experience as foundational to patient experience outcomes.
