Foundations of Mixed Methods Research Integrating Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches in the Social and Behavioral Sciences by Charles Teddlie and Abbas Tashakkori, is an essential reference for novice and expert researcher of Mixed method research.
I would totally recommend Handbook of mixed methods in social and behavioral research by Sage instead of this book
Foundations of mixed methods research is a rather important text; not for undergraduates but essential for post-graduate study; especially in terms of Masters by research and PhD; proper level 7 & 8 if you like.
The strengths of the text are in a number of areas, principally in the integrative nature of methods qual and quant but more subtly in the integration of the philosophical positions. It provides challenge to post graduate researchers in terms of situation their study, the leanings, the methods and integration. What is really successful here is the simplicity in which rather complex positions are put; it makes intuitive sense and is accessible to the postgraduate researcher.
It is then my favorite recommendation to level 7 & 8 for students looking at a mixed methods approach.
On a final note, the glossary of research terms is just wonderful; from scientific (and social scientific) philosophy to practical research terms in the mess that is social science research language. I may disagree with some of the definitions but hey we all do… this for me is in the top five of my research methods desert island research textbooks. No wonder everyone else references it.
Clearly written, gives a great impression of what mixed methods entail. It is useful for an advanced course as you have to have a bit of a background in both qualitative and quantitative research to understand it. The reason I didn't adopt it is because mixed methods are no longer a part of the curriculum.
Useful in clarifying student's position when considering this combined approach.
This book is now part of the recommended literature
This is an excellent text book- provides the students/researchers with the necessary information regarding the mixed method research. I recommend this book to all midwifery postgraduate students.
A very good book which will enhance students' research in mixed design
shall be a reference guide for myself as instructor. thank you.
The authors present a balanced view of the paradigms associated with QUAL and QUAN methods.
