An Introduction to Young Children With Delays and Disabilities
Birth Through Age Eight

Sixth Edition

July 2024 | 472 pages | SAGE Publications, Inc
An Introduction to Young Children With Delays and Disabilities: Birth Through Age Eight introduces readers to educational policies, services, and practices for future educators serving young children birth through age eight with delays and disabilities in early intervention/early childhood special education (EI/ECSE). Thoughtfully and comprehensively addressing the needs of young children and their families, authors Richard M. Gargiulo and Jennifer L. Kilgo offer interventions and instructional techniques that provide students with a broad understanding of important theoretical and philosophical foundations, including evidence-based decision making, cultural and linguistic responsiveness, and appropriate instruction and interventions in classroom settings and beyond.

The Sixth Edition has been thoroughly updated to incorporate the Initial Practice-Based Professional Preparation Standards for Early Interventionists/Early Childhood Special Educators developed by the Division for Early Childhood (DEC) and Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) in 2020, as well as the DEC Recommended Practices.

This text is offered in Sage Vantage, an intuitive learning platform that integrates quality Sage textbook content with assignable multimedia activities and auto-graded assessments to drive student engagement and ensure accountability. Overall good content for students in the area of children with delays or disabilities; right amount of 'additional materials' without distracting from the content.

Anne M. Ryan
St. Petersburg College

Very thorough; uses multiple mediums throughout the book for understanding and mastery; learning objectives are clearly stated; key terms/vocabulary are included in each chapter... I think this is a very comprehensive book, and I am seriously considering switching to it. It can be a stand-alone text with very little or no additional materials needed to enhance the course objectives.

Kimberly Cassidy
Shawnee State University

A strong introductory textbook for Early Intervention programs.

I find this book to be extremely well-written. The information is clearly delineated, and it is very explicit which allows students to easily grasp crucial concepts. The physical layout of the book is appealing with graphics, tables of information, and images that are easy to follow. It includes current information especially with legislation. It also allows for discussion of current issues in special education. All of the embedded examples help to highlight the information and make concepts clear.

Generally, I am satisfied with this text (have REALLY liked the e-Text version), and from my students' evaluations, they appear to gain from the course and text.
