Useful text for early years students
This book will be used in conjunction with several others for a taught session on planning for outdoor play. The first year B.Ed students will be undertaking placements in Children's Centres, so the case studies in this book will be most useful.
Essential core reading for students studying and working within Early Years. Jan White explores children’s outdoor play through children’s own experiences, adult’s role, suitable environments and dealing with challenge, risk and safety. This book highlights the importance of the outdoor provision, child development, creativity and children’s right to engage in play. The book is filled with inspiring pictures and various examples how to plan outdoor provision successfully. In addition this book contains several thinking points which carry the reader to reflect on their own learning.
Outdoor provision does not always get the high profile it should. This text is an excellent point of reference for all who work with young children.
As we look to developing trainees ideas about the place of play and physical activity outside of the classroom, this resource will be recommended. The case studies will help the trainees to picture scenarios that they can then discuss to extend their understanding. Whilst the chapter on ‘Challenge, Risk and Safety’ is important it is good to see that the value and importance of outdoor play dominates the book and focusses the attention of the reader onto the positives of outdoor play for the early years.
The text provides the value and importance of outdoor play for young children and the role the practioner.
Well written with clear examples and illustrations.
Have suggested students purchase as an aid to ongoing professional practice.
