Forest School and Outdoor Learning in the Early Years
- Sara Knight - Teacher and Forest School Leader
Expanding on aspects of Forest School teaching, and drawing on new developments and policy changes within the field, this new edition also includes:
- a new chapter on working with parents
- greater coverage of the 0-2 age range
- new case studies to aid learning
- coverage of international approaches to Forest School
Yet again Sara Knight delivers an inspirational text for all those working in or studying early years education and care.
Sara Knight is an experienced early years educator and Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University. She is a trained Forest School practitioner and author of Forest Schools For All and Risk and Adventure in Early Years Outdoor Play (both published by SAGE).
'Knight again offers a readily accessible publication style for forest preschool and school practitioners; she effectively weaves together case studies, practical insights and theory to create an engaging and informative reference. A new chapter highlights the importance of working with parents and carers and useful updates responding to the revised Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFSC) are included'
-Dr Sue Elliott, Senior Lecturer Early Childhood Education, School of Education, Australian Catholic University
Sara provides evidence-based research as well as practical ideas through case studies. The book also shares the importance of being respectful of the environment, about keeping ourselves safe and changing attitudes about outdoor play to make it a priority in the early childhood curriculum.
Essential reading for practitioners and students. Insightful and knowledgeable. A must on your classroom bookshelf
This Text is informative and explores many of the key areas for learning within our module for developing a forest school.
This book supported a Y3 module and placement in a Forest school.
A readily accessible and evidence based publication is offered in response to the revised EYFS. Invaluable case studies support and give practical insight so that practitioners can engage creatively with their own practice. I particularly like the advice given about respecting the environment, keeping safe.
A good text to support the benefits of outdoor play practice. Essential reading.
The first edition of this book (2009) was already on the module indicative reading list. For those students who choose to write their summative essay on the subject of forest school it is an essential text. The latest edition provides clear, current information both in terms of language used and structure. Students find it accessible and useful.
An easy reading book that captures the essence of the forest school philosophy.
A very interesting read, particularly useful to trainees working towards QTS status within the 3-7 age range.
Very useful book as a supplement to our outdoor learning session. Have recommended the book to interested students, and it is always on display during the taught session. Thank you.
